Bayside is actively involved in research efforts. Not only does this contribute to the field of pediatrics, but it keeps us up to date with the newest information in the field. Here are some of our recent and current efforts:

  • Publication in "Contemporary Pediatrics", June, 2010. Pediatric Puzzler: The Case of the Trembling Leg. Authors include Bayside physicians Tina Hong, MD, and Budd Shenkin, MD, in collaboration with Michael Cabana, MD, and Audrey Foster-Barber, MD, at UCSF department of pediatrics.

  • "Childhood Asthma Management Project (ChAMP)" / Steps in Assuming Progressive Responsibility for Asthma Treatment -- Research project with Department of Pediatrics, UCSF. This study is about how parents teach kids with asthma how to take care of their own symptoms. Enrollment recently closed, and we are now awaiting the results of the data anaylsis.

  • "Trial of Infant Probiotic Supplementation (TIPS) Study" -- Research project with Department of Pediatrics, UCSF. This study is examining whether probiotics can prevent asthma in children.
This study is for newborn infants who have either a mother with asthma or a father with asthma. We are investigating if a probiotic supplement (Lactobacillus GG) given for the first 6 months of life can prevent the later development of asthma. For this study all the visits occur at home, except for 3 visits to UCSF. Parents receive $150 over the course of the study. Children receive free allergy skin-testing. • "Probiotics in Crying Kids (PACK) Study" -- Research project with Department of Pediatrics, UCSF. This study is examining the effect of probiotics on infant colic symptoms.
This study is for infants 3 weeks to 15 weeks old, with a one week history of 'fussiness' or crying for at least 3 hours/day for at least 3 days. We are investigating if a probiotic supplement (L. reuteri) can decrease colic symptoms. For this study all the visits occur at home. Parents receive $150 over the course of the study, as well as free study infant formula. Click on link above or see PACK Study Poster.

  • "Growth-Rates and Feeding Synbiotics (G-RAFS) Study" -- Research project with Department of Pediatrics, UCSF. This study is looking at the effectiveness of an infant formula with a synbiotic (probiotic + prebiotic) supplement on growth rates.
This study is for infants 1 week old who are formula-fed. We are investigating if a formula with added Synbiotics (probiotic + prebiotic) can enhance growth rates. For this study all the visits can occur at home. Parents receive $150 over the course of the study, as well as free study infant formula. Click on link above, or see G-RAFS Study Poster.
